Corporate US is facing the fact that if this country is to educate its youth, business must play a leading role. Because the problem is so enormous and entrenched, it will take immense effort and tremendous allocaton of resources, both financial and personal. Companies of all sizes are
addressing the problem through personal means, by working one-on-one with students, or through broad-based means, by getting involved in significant
educational reform. Human resources departments must become involved if this partnership of business and education is to work; it must develop an ongoing relationship, working with educators so that, as business needs change, they change their curriculum. Some companies already involved in this partnership are profiled. They include Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), Burger King Corp., Champion International Corp., Pacific Telesis Foundation, Cray Research Inc., and UNUM Life Insurance Co.

The phone rang. It was Kinney's student, a bright high school senior whom Kinney had been mentoring since the girl was a
junior. Could Kinney give her a little help?
